After leaving college in 1976, my first job was in the Leeds office of a private, West Yorkshire based firm of Surveyors and Estate Agents called Eddisons where I stayed for the next 20 years, becoming an Associate of the firm in 1985. I was happy with the way my career was progressing until, during a time of major changes in the property industry in the '80's, the firm was bought out by the Leeds Permanent Building Society. Although it seemed that business continued as usual, the inevitable corporate influence began to take hold. It was not much longer before the corporate machine took over completely when the Leeds Permanent and Halifax building societies 'merged'. This prompted a move to join Manning Staintons, another small firm of Surveyors and Estate Agents in Leeds, and where I stayed for 2 years. However, during my time there, I realised I had the experience, ability and will to offer a professional, personal surveying service on my own account at very competitive, affordable prices. So, I made the break in 1998 and set up 'SYKES RESIDENTIAL SURVEYS' covering the Leeds and Huddersfield areas. I have no regrets whatsoever and, with the benefit of hindsight, wish that I had started on my own sooner, although none of us has a crystal ball!
